Tuning forks are generally associated with music as they originated for that purpose in the early 18th Century although they have been adapted over subsequent years for many different scientific and medical applications including sound therapy. The Ragg family commenced manufacture of tuning forks in Sheffield in 1840 and became the sole UK producer in the early 20th century. The collection in the auction includes tuning forks manufactured for a wide variety of specialist uses over many years up to the 1970’s. Particularly interesting applications include a set of tuning forks from the 1950’s for checking early police speed “radars” (roadside speed cameras nowadays) and a variety of vintage and specialist forks for medical and scientific applications including a “stroboscope” fork for checking Post Office telex calibration.
