"Dutch Peasants from Market Waiting for the Ferry Boat"

Apparently unsigned, oil on canvas, 64cm by 167.5cm

Sold for £4,500
Estimated at £5,000 - £8,000

Unlined, covered in a thick layer of dirt and discoloured varnish. The canvas has slightly slipped in frame and there is evidence of mostly horizontally arranged fine and linear retouches along upper edge presumably to disguise old rub marks from slips. These have slighly dicoloured an are visible by eye. Patch of over painting/retouching along left-hand side edge approx 30cm from lower left corner that covers area between outer edge and upright pole behind the brick built ledge that a blue and white pot sits upon. The pole looks to have been strengthened/retouched. Further delicate and mostly sporadic retouches to lower left-hand corner and the bottom section / shadowy parts below the brick-built plinth. Delicate retouches to the lower right-hand side of far left-hand side . Sporadic fine and delicate retouches on the body of large pouring vessel and parts of the lower skirts worn by the seated lady. Horizontal narrow band of retouching towards lower right-hand corner edge approx 30cm from lower right-hand corner, no more than 0.5cm across and approx 5cm in length. Possible minor area of strengthening to sky immediately behind the sails of the far right-hand side barge. Slight stretcher shadow, fairly large-sized stable cracquelure throughout. Slightly indistinct Christies stencil to upper stretches reverse S570J? Good amount od dust and dirt to the reverse.
