Green, Ward & Co, circa 1825: A Design for a Commemorative Silver Table Centrepiece, in the form of two Chinese sailors flanking a palm stem and top, on a waisted plinth inscribed To Captain George Westhead of the Honble E.I. Ship General Harris and Senior Commander of the China Ship of the Season 1823-24. The Officers who served during that period present this tribute to his worth as a commander and gentleman over a Bacchus mask and fruiting vine, on paw feet, grey wash, 41cm by 14cm, the reverse with inscribed in pencil Extreme height about 2ft 9in made by Green, Ward & Co
Possibly Green, Ward & Co was a truncation of Green, Ward, Green & Ward (1818-29) of 1 Ludgate Street, London. See Culme (John) The Directory of Gold and Silversmiths, where he records that the firm was celebrated and that it made large candelabra, some of massive size

This Summer Tennants Auctioneers are delighted to present a single-owner sale of ceramics and collector’s curiosities in David Battie: A Study Collection. The sale will comprise over 180 lots of academic interest from David Battie’s extensive and important collection. With an eye for the unusual, David Battie has assembled a fascinating collection filled with rare and interesting pieces.
David Battie joined Sotheby’s in 1965 and worked in the Ceramics and Oriental Art Departments before being made a director in 1976. He was a regular face on the Antiques Roadshow for many years and appeared on the show from the first episode, which was aired in 1977. A leading authority on ceramics, and in particular Chinese and Japanese ceramics, David has written numerous publications on the subject.
