Militaria & Ethnographica

  Lot 132

132

A Second World War Fighting Knife, Second Pattern, with 17.5cm hand forged unmarked steel blade, plain elliptical crossguard, brass diamond chequered grip, pommel nut missing, the pommel is now incised to hold the tang in place, together with original leather scabbard with brass chape, securing straps missing, 30.5cm; an Arab Jambiya, the 15cm double edge curved steel blade with incised scalloped decoration, the sectional bone and horn hilt inlaid with coloured dots, with brass scabbard, 28cm; a 19th Century Leather Shot Flask, with brass charger (3)

Footnote:- The fighting knife was acquired by the vendor's father when he crossed over to France with a fellow soldier after the D-Day landings. He had been recovering from an injury, so was not with his unit when they landed and had to follow on later. He was not a Commando, so the knife was not one that had been issued to him.

Sold for £200
Estimated at £150 - £200

1 - Blade has been sharpened, rust pitting to the surface particularly on one side near the tip. The crossguard and grip are a little jiggly as the pommel nut is not present. The pommel had an H shape incision which has raised the metal and fixed the tang in place. 2 - Orange rust pitting to the blade at the ricasso. Some cracks and loss of inlay to the grip. 3 - no visible damage.
