A German Silver Mounted Carved Ivory Tankard, the foot struck with pseudo marks, probably Hanau, late 19th century, also struck with French weevil duty marks, in the 17th century style, the mounts chased with fruit, foliage and masks, the hinged cover with a young Bacchus finial, the ivory body carved in high relief with a Bacchanalian scene featuring satyrs, nymphs and putti in a woodland setting, 26cm high

Sold for £3,800
Estimated at £2,000 - £3,000

. Foot rim is loose and can be detached from the ivory body. Hinge with some sideways movement as per construction. Some general wear to the high points of the decoration and chasing. A hand of one satyr has been broken off and the arm of the finial has been re-stuck, otherwise the ivory appears generally in good order, with the occasional small nick. Some ingrained dirt to both details of ivory and mounts.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.

We accept no liability for the opinions expressed in any Condition Report.
