A Victorian Silver Vesta-Case, Maker's Mark Rubbed, apparently C? or G?, Birmingham, 1896, oblong, cast and chased with a horse racing scene showing two horses racing towards the finishing post within a landscape, the hinged cover with a striker, 5.5cm wide, 17dwt

A very similar vesta-case to the present example, marked for Chester 1895, was sold in these room 17 July 2008, lot 679. That example features three horses galloping past a stand and seems to have been a more common pattern with many other examples known.

Sold for £450
Estimated at £200 - £300

. Fully marked on the back. The inside of the cover further marked with lion passant and date letter. The maker's mark is rubbed. It could possibly be the mark of Saunders and Shepherd. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points. There are some minor bruises and pin dents.
