Summer Fine Sale

  Lot 136

136

A Chinese Armorial Porcelain Dish, painted in famille rose enamels with the arms of Lambert over a scroll with the motto SEGUITANDO.SI.GIUNGE within a floral diaper border and two three-plumed crests and two flowersprays within a foliate rim
42cm diameter

For a discussion of the service see Sanctuary Howard (David) Chinese Armorial Porcelain, pg.206 where it is noted that Sir John Lambert, a wealthy London merchant and director of the South Sea Company, was created baronet in February 1711 and died in February 1723, to be succeeded by his son, Sir John, second baronet.

It has been the unvaried tradition that this service was made for the first baronet although armorially there is no reason why the service could not have been made for Sir John’s son. This service is therefore the earliest dateable example of the new famille rose enamels being used on Chinese porcelain influenced by European originals. The order for the service possibly having been despatched in 1720 or 1721 before the full effect of the bursting of the South Sea Bubble was felt.

Not Sold

Small glazed-over manufacturing flaw to reverse of outer rim. Some typical minor wear to decoration, also particularly to gilding of armorial.
