Sir Kyffin Williams KBE, OBE, RA (1918-2006)
"Gwastadnant"
Initialled, oil on canvas, 49cm by 59.5cm

Exhibited: Royal Academy Summer Exhibition 1993

Anglesey born Kyffin Williams is celebrated for his depictions of the Welsh landscape and "Gwastadnant" is one of several paintings of the hamlet in Caernarfonshire. Here the artist clearly demonstrates his signature colour scheme of subdued black, greys, browns, olive greens and bold usage of a palette knife.

After attending the Slade School of Fine Art, Williams went on to become Senior Art Master at Highgate School from 1944-73, in 1968 he gained a Winston Churchill Fellowship to record the Welsh in Patagonia. He was president of the RCamA in 1969-76 and was elected RA in 1974. He exhibited at Colnaghi, the Leicester Galleries, Howard Roberts Gallery in Cardiff and Thackeray Gallery, amongst others.
Throughout his time in London, Wales never left his consciousness or imagination. He would return home in holidays, sketch his beloved landscape and complete his canvasses in London. On retiring from Highgate School Williams returned to Anglesey where he spent the next 30 years painting, and promoting Welsh Art. In 1995 he received the Glyndwr Award for an Outstanding Contribution to the Arts in Wales. He was also awarded OBE for his services to the arts in 1982 and a KBE in 1999.
His works are held by Arts Council, WAC, the National Museum and National Library of Wales, the National Portrait Gallery and other important collections nationwide.
