Together with 88 smaller-format photographs by Cope, approximate dimensions 138 x 248 mm to 205 x 292 mm, similar subjects and presentation (a few being reduced versions of the larger images), and a selection of related documents including Cope's handwritten speech notes, magazine cuttings, and similar (qty: approx. 180 mounted photographic prints and small quantity of related documents) John Heaton Cope ARPS (1926-2020) was a professional photographer with Birmingham City Council for 44 years, and towards the end of his career also worked as chief photographer at Birmingham City Museum and Art Gallery. He lectured on the Midlands circuit of photographic societies for three decades and was an active member of the Leica Portfolio Club. He retired to Ravenstonedale near Kirkby Stephen, Cumbria in 1993. He was an admirer of Cartier-Bresson and his son recalls a visit to an exhibition of the great photographer's work in London sometime in the 1950s-60s.
