Robert Mouseman Thompson (1876-1955): An English Oak Blanket Chest, 1928, 3/4 hinged top with wrought iron leaf hinges, mouse tails to the front corners, the front with chip carving and three carved panels, the centre panel dated and initials 1928 JKB (John and Kathleen Brunton) enclosed by two medieval profiles, below FERE GOD LOVE GOD, carved mouse trademark on left panel, on four stile supports,
108cm wide, 52cm deep, 66cm high

This chest is based on a 16th Century example held in the collection of the Victoria and Albert museum, and which was illustrated in Robert Thompson's copy of Early English Furniture & Woodwork, a 1922 publication by Crescinsky and Gribble. Robert annotated the page, next to the illustration with notes and working drawings, and the book is still in the possession of the Thompson family at Kilburn.

John James Brunton (14th July 1882- 3rd February 1948) married Alice Kathleen Rycroft (1st September 1895- 5th June 1975) in 1928 at St Matthew's Church, Lightcliffe, Halifax.

Water marks to the back of top. Grain split in back of top. Natural defects in the oak. Splash/water marks. Front 3/4 is warped. Natural splits in the back plank and water marks. Replacement part to top of lock. See extra images.

Auction: 20th Century Design, 2nd Mar, 2024

A selection of good, early pieces of Robert 'Mouseman' Thompson furniture will be coming up in the 20th Century Design Sale on 2nd March, including a circa 1929 Monk's Chair from Ampleforth Abbey, two circa 1930s Monk's Chairs from the Horlicks family, and a circa 1930s Partner's Desk. These will be joined by a strong offering of modern Mouseman. A further good example of Arts and Crafts furniture comes in the form of a very finely made Cotswold School Dressing Mirror. 

Amongst the ceramics in the sale will be the Dr John C. Yule Collection of Linthorpe and Middlesbrough Pottery, a Private Collection of Dennis Chinaworks Pottery, a good example of Pilkington's Royal Lancastrian, and a Private Collection of Studio Pottery including pots by Richard Batterham.
