Group of five covers with late line-engraved frankings in combination with surface-printed issues, bought individually at auction many years ago with an eye for attractive postmarks: 1867 3d rose plate 4 SG.103 (the scarcer plate, approx. cat. £600) on 1867 cover to Amsterdam along with plate 80 1d red paying late fee, with immaculate backstamps in blue (transit cds) and red (arrival cds); 1868 3d rose plate 5 wing-margin pair on 1870 double-rate cover to Paris with plate 106 1d red pair; 1872 6d chestnut SG.122a with plate 139 1d red on 1872 cover to Melbourne, with nice uncircled 'Hawthorne, Victoria' datestamp on reverse; 1872 deep chestnut SG.122 with plate 122 1d red on beautiful 1st of May 1872 cover to Naples; 1874 3d rose plate 14, SG.144, with plate 14 2d blue (re-entry) paying late fee on 1874 cover to New York with red boxed 'L2' and endorsed '"China" via Queenstown'. A lovely group.

261 lots including several exciting original collections fresh to the market. Highlights include a specialised collection of St. Helena stamps and postal history, and a very extensive and impressive holding of Russian postal history with a particular focus on the Post Offices Abroad. The latter collector’s interests also extended through the Baltics to excellent Scandinavian Locals, as well as around the Eastern Mediterranean from the Balkans to Palestine and Egypt.
Amongst the postcards offered in the sale are fantastic albums from a dedicated collector, of high-quality and comprehensively assembled, which include transport related cards of Leeds, Skipton, Lancaster, Teesside and Middlesbrough as well as excellent general Yorkshire cards.
