[Maurice, Thomas] An Elegiac and Historical Poem, sacred to the Memory and Virtues of the Honourable Sir William Jones containing a Retrospective Survey of the Progress of Science, and the Mohammedan Conquests in Asia. Printed for the Author, and Sold by Himself, 1795. 4to, modern half cloth over marbled boards; pp. 39, blank, [4 (notes)], [4 (Proposals for a new work for subscription)]. Although dated as the first edition of the poem (1795), an advertisement makes reference to the call for a second edition which has allowed the author to correct errors and make amendments as needed. The poem begins as a homage to Gray and moves through a dramatic history of the wars and conquests of India, coming naturally to the eulogised arrival of the British, all within a poetical day-night, and finishing with a study of Jones.
