An East African Staff, circa 1930, the figural pommel carved as an Askari (locally recruited trooper) wearing a fez, belted tunic and shorts in the style of Thoma Ona Odulate, on a tapering cylindrical haft, 127cm; an East African Headrest, circa 1920, carved from one piece of light coloured wood, with narrow dished rectangular top on outswept supports carved with bands of leaves and joined by a coiled leather carrying handle, 19.5cm high (2)

Footnote:- Both items were brought back to the UK by the family of elderly relatives who had been stationed in East Africa just after the First World War.

Staff with tiny chips to ears of the Askari, with a fine split to the fez, one eye set with an aluminium rivet, the other is missing a rivet. Small chip to the back of his tunic.
Headrest with a chip to the corner of one support.

Auction: Militaria & Ethnographica, 20th Sep, 2023

The sale will offer a range of good medals, including a rare silver medal struck to commemorate the death of Captain James Cook, and a Second World War MM Group of Eight Medals, awarded to Corporal Frank Shepherd of the 1st-5th Battalion the Queen’s Royal Regiment.

Amongst a good offering of militaria in the sale is a Victorian 1847 Pattern Gilt Brass Helmet to an Officer 4th Royal Irish Dragoon Guards, a First World War Cameron Highlander’s Kilt and Sash which belonged to Private George Potts Brown, and an Early 19th Century Naval Officer’s Dirk.

A rare 19th Century Percussion Single Barrel Big Game Rifle by William Powell & Son of Birmingham leads a selection of fine guns in the sale, also of note are a Pair of 19th Century 40 Bore Side-by-Side Double Barrel Percussion Travelling Pistols.
