A Pair of Chinese Cloisonné Enamel Elephants, Qing Dynasty, circa 1800, each standing beast supporting a vase, decorated in raised floral enamel against a gilded ground, the bodies of the elephants in a dark aubergine/chocolate colour, bejewelled and inset with cabochon cut garnets and other stones around a foliate saddlecloth enriched with ruyi and lotus devices, hinged fringe ends, 26.5cm high, 20.5cm long

With original receipt: Purchased from Spink & Son Ltd, London, 7th April 1949 for £285. The elephants are referred to as Ch'ien-Lung 1736-1795AD

Sold for £60,000
Estimated at £5,000 - £8,000

Elephant 1 - at least twenty-five small 'jewels' missing. General small enamel losses throughout (and particularly to the tri-limbed hanging 'ribbons' (two pairs on each side of the animal). Some enamel at the top of the elephant's right ear missing and probably with minor restoration. The gilding on one of the ring handles on the fo dog headed shoulder masks is heavily rubbed of gilding. Elephant 2 - at least twenty-eight jewels missing from around the piece. The enamel on the triple pronged 'ribbon' motifs (two at each side of the animal) are chipped of enamel and some restorations. Top of the elephant's right ear has had a knock revealing some wires and crumbly enamel. The saddlecloth of this one (in contrast to elephant 1) has had some of the missing stones filled in with enamel (possibly at a later date?). This accounts for nine of the 'at least 28 missing stones' reference earlier. One ring on the shoulder handle of the vase is heavily rubbed. Both with typical manufacturing faults throughout (ie minute pimples in the aubergine/chocolate ground colour). General rubbing of gilding and cracking of enamels (to both elephants). 290114
