Having identified the model of the male figure as Moses in his 1921 book on Venetian sculptors, Leo Planiscig attributed this model to Tiziano Aspetti. However, in 1976 Ian Wardroper observed that the figure holds a book rather than a tablet of the law and should be considered a prophet. In 1545 Aspetti was commissioned to execute a Serraglio (grille) for the Santo in Padua. Vasari records that this commission remained incomplete due to the premature death of the sculptor. In 1564 Paduan sculptor Francesco Segala requested the models in order to make casts.

Auction: Summer Fine Sale, 13th Jul, 2024
The Summer Fine Sale offers nearly 450 lots of ceramics, Asian art, clocks, rugs, works of art and furniture, including a collection of 19th century Terracotta Campagna Urns from Raby Castle, County Durham, a Lock of Florence Nightingale's Hair, and a French Alabaster Figure Group of the Holy Family, probably made in South West France in the late 14th century. A Private Collection of English Pottery will be offered in twenty-three lots, including numerous Prattware and Creamware figures, and the sale will also include pieces of fine 19th century furniture and good early oak and walnut furniture.
