Taxidermy: A Group of Long-Tailed Ducks, dated 1913, 1919, 1965, a full mount adult female in winter plumage, stood atop a seaweed covered faux rock, with pebbled groundwork beneath, overall height 36cm, with attached data label - Long-tailed Duck, Female Adult Winter, 3rd 1st 1913, Lydd, Kent, probably mounted by George Bristow, after comparing handwritten notes to the verso of a documented case by Bristow's hand, the handwriting to the base of this female Long-tailed Duck is nearly identical, a full mount downy youngster Long-tailed Duckling, stood upon a painted faux rock base, with attached data label - 12th 7th 1965, Lake Myvatn, Iceland, together with a full mount adult male Long-tailed Duck in summer plumage, purchased from George Bristow, Taxidermist, St Leonards, Hastings, stood upon a painted faux rock base, overall height 32cm, with attached data label - Long-tailed Duck, Male Adult Summer, 10th 3rd 1919, Rye Harbour, Sussex, What appears to be this bird is mentioned on a list accompanying a letter from George Bristow to Dr James Harrison dated 21st June 1935. It looks as though Bristow had purchased, or was selling, an accumulation of older specimens as they date from 1913 to 1933. The bird is listed as a male from Rye dated 19th 3rd 1919, in this instance Dr James Harrison has applied the incorrect date to the attached data label, stating 10th 3rd 1919, handwritten date to verso of the base 19. 3. 19, a trait George Bristow seems to have applied on occasion.

Auction: The James Harrison Collection of Birds, 20th May, 2022

The James Harrison Collection comprises over 200 lots of cased and freemount birds dating from the late Victorian era to the middle of the 20th century. The collection includes rare and unusual examples, such as a passenger pigeon and a kiwi, as well as mounts by the likes of Rowland Ward, James Gardner, Charles Kirk and George Bristow.

James Maurice Harrison (1892-1971) was an ornithologist and one of the last great bird collectors, who gathered large numbers of specimens to study moult patterns, distribution, geographical and colour variation within and between species. A GP by profession, Harrison filled his family home and Doctor's Surgery, Bowerwood House in Kent, with his extraordinary collection.
