A Fascinating and Possibly Unique Group of Eleven Second World War/Post War Medals to a British Serviceman with a Remarkable History of Military Service, comprising 1939-45 Star, Defence and War Medal awarded to PLY/X 108611 Acting Sergeant Roy Frederick Thacker Roberts, Royal Marines; a General Service Medal 1918-62, with clasp MALAYA, renamed to 21182353 PTE.R.ROBERTS, K.O.Y.L.I.; a Korea Medal, renamed to 22634823 PTE.R.ROBERTS, D.L.I., and UN Korea Medal; a French Foreign Legion Group of Three to Legionaire Eric Roberson (Roy Frederick Thacker Roberts) of Commemorative Medal for Security Operations and Maintaining Order with bar ALGERIE, French Army Medal for the Defence of the Nation with two bars LEGION ETRANGERE and MISSIONS D'ASSISTANCE EXTERIEURE, and Croix du Combattant Volontaire with bar AFRIQUE DU NORD; Vietnam Medal and South Vietnam Campaign Medal named to A58118 DIXON R.F. (Aka: Roy Frederick Thacker Roberts); together with Royal Marines and KOYLI cap badges, all loosely mounted on annotated display cards, with two binder files and three smaller files of extensive research material including his Australian Service documents, portrait photographs, a book by James William Worden "Wayward Legionnaire - a Life in the Foreign Legion", a DVD - The Battle for Algiers, and a bottle of Victory Ale.
Footnote :- Roy Frederick Thacker Roberts was born 31.3.1925 in Great Yarmouth. He enlisted in the Royal Marines 21.7.1942, serving until 10.8.1946 when he bought out. He re-enlisted 18.12.1947 with the Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry, later serving in Malaya with 2nd Bn. K.O.Y.L.I., later 1st Bn. D.L.I.; served in Korea; was discharged as a Substantive Corporal/Acting Sergeant (bought out at own request 5.6.1957); enlisted with the French Foreign Legion 28.5.1958 under the name of Eric Roberson; changed his name by deed poll 4.5.1967 to Roy Dixon; enlisted with the Royal Australian Air Force 23.4.1968 service number A58118, served two tours in Vietnam; discharged on request 16.11.1973; died in Great Yarmouth on 3.12.1996 at the age of 71 years. It is possible that he lost his Korea Medal and General Service Medal when serving in the French Foreign Legion, hence the medals included are renamed.

The June Militaria & Ethnographica Sale will offer a broad and interesting array of medals, including a fascinating and possibly unique Group of Eleven Second World War and Post War Medals to a British serviceman with a remarkable history of military service, and First World War DSC Group of Medals, which were awarded to Captain George F. Hiles, Master of S.S. Portaferry, which rescued the crew of a French steamer after she had been torpedoed by an enemy submarine in 1917.
Further interesting lots of Militaria include an Inert Rapier Drill Missile measuring 2.32 metres long, the War Diary of Major General Sir Cecil Lowther, who was in command of the 1st Battalion Scots Guards as Lieutenant Colonel, and there are also good quality binoculars, police truncheons, cap badges, Victorian and Edwardian helmet plates and various Edwardian, Victorian and later uniforms.
Of archaeological interest is a very rare Middle Bronze Age Complete Spearhead, found by a metal detectorist in Northumberland. The spearhead dates from circa 1550-1250 BC and is made from copper alloy; it is sold with a report from the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
The sale will also offer nearly 120 lots of regimental silver from The Royal Lancers (Queen Elizabeths' Own) Regiment and The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers to benefit The Royal Lancers Charitable Trust and the Fusiliers' Aid Society respectively.
