Bernard Leach (1887-1979): A Stoneware Tree of Life Vase, circa 1959, incised and painted with three trees on a mottled ash glaze, impressed potter's seal, St Ives mark and ENGLAND, 33cm high See illustration



Sold with a signed letter from Bernard Leach, dated 11th February 1957, discussing pottery training



Provenance: Purchased direct from the potter in St Ives by the vendor's mother whilst on holiday



Leach said he was inspired by Han Dynasty Tomb Art after a trip to China (1914-1916) to create this motif (see Oliver Watson, Bernard Leach - Potter and artist, exhibition catalogue, Tokyo 1997, page 118, No.1250)
