George V, 'Hollow Neck Penny' 1911, obv. the King's neck slightly modified with a distinct indentation to the right side of a pronounced neck tendon, to date only found on 1911 coins whereas in the much more common obv. the king's neck is flat; in addition, on the 'hollow neck' obverse the 'I' in 'BRITT' and the 'I' in 'IMP' both point to border beads (in other dies they point between beads). (This rare variety of the 1911 penny was discovered by Michael Gouby, author of 'The British Bronze Penny from 1860 - 1970' but unpublished in Freeman & Wilson Peck. In 2016 a VF example sold for £650 (excluding buyer's premium), the same coin selling for £75 in 1999). The 'hollow neck' penny in the present lot attractively toned GEF. RARE
