Collection of 19th Century White Cotton and Lace Baby Caps Belonging to the Norcliffe Family of Langton from the 18th Century, some embroidered, knitted and several with attached paper labels 'Cap worn by Ann Wilson, afterwards Mrs Norcliffe born 1762', 'Cap worn by Rosamund Best, afterwards Mrs H Robinson at the Christening in 1808, given her by her Grandmother Norcliffe', 'Cap worked by Georgina Amble for Hugh Robinson, 1831'; cotton panel with drawn threadwork labelled 'Cap begun by Mrs Best'; and a bodice top labelled, 'Waist of Rosamund Best Christening Frock, 1808, worked by Mrs Lawton'; and one volume, The World of Mary Ellen Best by Caroline Davidson Provenance: Lt Col Thomas Norcliffe was a prominent Yorkshire landowner, his daughter Mary married Dr Charles Best of York, they had two daughters Mary Ellen Best and Rosamund. Mary Ellen was encouraged to paint from an early age and a unique collection of her watercolours were sold in New York in 1983, forming the basis of the accompanying book. Hugh Robinson was Rosamund's son.
