In Wonderland: A Wood Brisé Fan, circa 1880's, the light polished sticks drawn with the title "In Wonderland", and illustrated with six Tenniel characters from Alice in Wonderland, written by Lewis Carroll, with text beneath. From the left, the Hare in costume, with trumpet and scroll, "The Queen of Hearts, she made some tarts, all on a summer day: The Knave of hearts he stole those tarts, and took them quite away!", the Mad Hatter with the dormouse "Twinkle twinkle little bat?, How I wonder what you're at, Up above the world you fly, Like a tea tray in the sky". The two central drawings show "The March Hare and the Mad hatter trying to put the Dormouse in the teapot", and below "The hatter left the Court without even waiting to put his shoes on". To the right, the Hatter "The wretched toe bled so that he shook both his shoes off" and finally the Hare consults his pocket watch, no verse. The recto shows a spray of roses with a ladybird perched on the stem. Guard length 9.25 inches or 23.5cm

Purchased at Christie's SK on 9th July 1985 for £130.00.

Alice In Wonderland was first published in 1865. The illustrator is known to be Sir John Tenniel (1820 to 1914)

Generally good and clean. The ribbon is sound but need to be re-spaced, and the wood next to the central ribbon slot is slightly damaged.
