Hopkins (Gerard Manley)
Poems of ..., now first published, edited with notes by Robert Bridges, London: Humphrey Milford, 1918, [8], 124 pages, half-title, 2 photogravure portraits with tissue-guards, 2 double-page plates of manuscript fascmile, original linen-backed blue paper boards, printed paper label to spine, edges untrimmed (spine-label rubbed, damp-staining to foot of spine and head of front board, small mark to rear board, contents slightly toned, tanning to reverse of plates, upper margin of D2 and D3 torn, E1 clumsily opened with tear to head of gutter, a few marks).

First edition, one of 750 copies only. Hopkins was soon forgotten after his death in Dublin in 1889, but 'Robert Bridges ... on whom the poet had relied to keep, treasure, and conceivably publish [his] poems ... believed that they must be printed, and was soon planning an edition with a short memoir ... The sensitive, handsome, and almost complete small edition, edited and largely designed by Bridges, was published at the end of 1918' (ODNB).
