A Silver and Amber-Mounted Glass Scent-Bottle
Possibly Early 18th Century

the bottle circular and with elongated neck, one side with a pull-off cover depicting Queen Anne, the other side formed from a coin dated 1703, the silver-mounted amber hinged cover with drop-ring handle

90mm high

Other examples of a similar form are known, for example three described as 'smelling bottles' which are illustrated by E. Launert, Scent and Scent Bottles, London, 1974, p46, fig. 34.

Sold for £450
Estimated at £150 - £250

There is overall surface scratching and wear. The wear is most noticeable as a softening to the coin and, to a lesser extent, the depiction of Queen Anne. There is some crazing and loss of finish to the amber. The suspension loop on the top and on the Queen Anne cover are both possibly later. There are some minor chips and scratches to the glass as well as some bruises to the silver mounts.

We cannot guarantee a reply to any requests made within 48 hours of the start of the auction. The absence of a Condition Report from a lot does not mean that the lot is in perfect condition. All lots are available on public view ahead of an auction and we encourage prospective buyers to inspect an item in person where possible. Our Condition Reports are not prepared by professional conservators, restorers, or engineers, and are prepared with the naked eye unless otherwise stated.

Regarding Pictures, Prints and Works on Paper, works are not examined out of the frame, unless specifically stated. Tennants Auctioneers do not cover damage to gilded wood or plaster picture frames, or to picture frame glass whilst the item is in our possession.
