Fine Jewellery, Watches & Silver

  Lot 2068

2068

A Russian Silver Vase, by Faberge, With Imperial Warrant, Workmaster Jenny Väkevä, St Petersburg, 1902-1908. Indistinct Scratched Inventory Number, tapering cylindrical and on three ball feet, the lower body part-fluted, set with three Russian coins depicting Empress Elizabeth and dated 1746, 1754 and 1756 below a band or anthemion and foliage on a matted ground, 16.2cm high, 14oz 2dwt, 439gr

A very similar bowl dated to 1908-1917, also by Faberge, though with the workmaster's mark of Jenny Väkevä's brother-in-law Alexander, was sold Christie's, London, 29 June 2010, lot 274. Like the present example, it was set with three coins depicting Empress Elizabeth. It is tempting to think that both the present example and the bowl mentioned above were part of a series made to commemorate the bi-centennial of the birth of Empress Elizabeth in 1709.

Sold for £3,200
Estimated at £700 - £1,000

Marked under base with Cyrillic Faberge mark below Imperial Warrant. Further marked with Kokoshnik mark. With incuse workmasters mark JW. There is the remains of a scratched inventory number to the left of the Faberge mark. It is very worn and only partly visible. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is most noticeable as a softening to some of the coins. There are some bruises and minor areas of pitting.
