by Reid and Son, Newcastle, 1824

baluster and on spreading foot, engraved on one side with a crest within motto and on the other with initials 'JM', with leaf-capped ivory-insulated handle, the hinged cover with fluted finial, engraved underneath 'G Metcalfe to J Metcalfe'

Fully marked near lower handle junction and further part marked on handle. The cover apparently unmarked. There is some wear to the marks but each is still legible. There are some surface scratches and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the engraving. There is some cracking and discolouration to the ivory insulators which appear to have been re-glued.
