North Shields is steeped in maritime heritage and a series life-size wooden doll statues have inhabited the town for more than 200 years.



The shipowner and brewer Alexander Bartleman erected the first doll, an old ships figurehead, in 1814 on the towns Liddell Street. The fifth was created by the Robert Thompson workshop in 1958 and recently restored in September 2020 and returned to Northumberland Park.

The sale will include 65 lots of Robert ‘Mouseman’ Thompson furniture and furnishings from legendary chef Marco Pierre White’s hotel The Rudloe Arms in Wiltshire, as well as key pieces from some of the leading names in the Decorative Arts and 20th Century Design, such as Bernard Leach, Émile Gallé, Martin Brothers, Carlo Bugatti, Elizabeth Fritsch, and Rene Laliqué.
