A Victorian Silver Inkstand
by William Wheatcroft Harrison, Sheffield, 1888

shaped oblong and on four ball and claw feet, with two reeded supports for the associated silver-mounted cut-glass bottles and with central box with cast Sphinx finial, engraved with an inscription

28.8cm wide, weighable silver 29oz 15dwt, 926gr

The inscription reads 'Presented to Major John Higgins on his retirement from the Command of the H Company 1st Volunteer Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment by Present and Past Members January 1889'.

Fully marked near rim and on box. Further part marked on cover, finial. The bottles further marked on neck mounts and inside cover. There is some wear to the marks. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. There are some chips to the bottles. The inscription reads 'Presented to Major John Higgins on his retirement from the Command of the H Company 1st Volunteer Battalion Lincolnshire Regiment by Present and Past Members January 1889'.
