  Lot 213

213

A British 1858 India Pattern .656 Calibre Percussion Musket, the 99cm smooth bore barrel with inspector's markings and V rear sight, the lock plate marked with crowned VR, 1859 /TOWER, the walnut full stock with three barrel bands, with brass trigger guard and butt plate stamped 1/1361/9/178, the right side of the butt stamped with broad arrow over WD, lacks ramrod and sling swivels, 140cm

Footnote :- This musket has been converted from an 1853 Pattern Enfield rifle-musket. Originally, the 1853 Pattern Enfield rifle-muskets were issued to Indian troops and were a contributory cause of the Indian Mutiny (1857-1859) because of the belief that animal fat had been incorporated in the grease for the cartridges. After the Mutiny, most Indian troops were issued with smooth-bore muskets which had to look like Enfield rifles. These muskets differed slightly by having a fixed V rear sight and an Indian made ramrod.

Sold for £200
Estimated at £300 - £400

Action works, holds at full and half cock. Rust pitting to barrel, particularly at the muzzle. The third barrel band is now secured with a piece of wire. Bruising to the stock. Lacks ramrod and sling swivels.
