The original, described by the National Museum of Ireland as representing '... a high point in early medieval craftsmanship and can be compared in this regard to the Tara Brooch and the Derrynaflan Paten.' is made from spun silver and applied with gold, silver, glass, amber and enamel. The underside is set with a polished rock crystal and the bowl and foot are attached with a bronze pin.
