A Rare Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds "James Bond" Small Crown Wristwatch with Original Gilt Writing Dial, signed Rolex, Oyster Perpetual 100m=330ft, model: Submariner, ref: 5508, 1958, (calibre 1530) lever movement signed and numbered 42255, butterfly rotor, "tropical" finish black glossy dial with luminous triangular, dot and baton markers, gilt finished outer minute track, markers and writing, "Mercedes" hands, 60-minute calibrated rotating black insert bezel, small screw down winding crown, screw back signed inside Montres Rolex S.A Geneva Switzerland and numbered 5508 and dated III.1958, case serial number 400850, Rolex stainless steel oyster bracelet with riveted spring loaded links and a deployant clasp numbered 4/63, end links stamped 64, 38mm wide see illustration

The reference 5508 was first released in 1958 and was the last models of the so-called 'James Bond' Submariners. The model was derived from the fact that the submariner worn frequently in the early Bond movies featured a case like this example without a crown guard.

30.09.20 Case and bracelet with surface scratches, bracelet links are in good condition with no stretching, case sides and lugs with minor dents, winding crown with small scratches and minor dent, plexi glass with scratches, bezel is rubbed between the 12 and 1 o'clock position and smaller rubbed marks in other parts of the bezel, bezel is rotating correctly, original dial finish, the dial lacquer has reacted and turned to a ''tropical'' chocolate brown finish, luminous hour markers are faded but have a good patina, some of the luminous to the hour marks is slightly lacking, gilt outer track, markers and writing is clear and in good condition, hands are discoloured and stained but again with a good patina, hand setting correctly, movement needs a clean, movement in going order.
