Catalogue Note:
Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg Saalfeld (1786-1861) was born in Coburg, the daughter of Franz Frederick Anton, Duke of Saxe-Coburg Saalfeld and his wife Countess Augusta of Reuss-Ebersdorf. She was to marry firstly Charles, Prince of Leiningen and had two children, sadly the prince was to die in 1814, only eleven years after they were married. She was to go on to marry Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Strathern in 1818. Prince Edward was the fourth son of George III and as neither he or his brothers had any legitimate issue there was concerns about the succession to the throne. The Duke and Duchess were to solve the crisis with the birth in 1819 of a daughter, Princess Alexandrina Victoria of Kent, who would go on to rule as Queen Victoria following the death of her uncles, firstly George IV and later William IV.

On the death of her second husband the duchess decided to stay on in England with the hope that her daughter would indeed inherit the throne. She lived at Kensington Palace, with the financial support of her brother Leopold, King of the Belgians until 1831 when she was finally granted an annuity as Victoria has finally been declared heir presumptive. The duchess died in 1861 and was buried at Frogmore, near Windsor Castle.
