A Rare Pre-Explorer Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed Rolex, Oyster...

A Rare Pre-Explorer Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch, signed Rolex, Oyster Perpetual Precision, model: Pre-Explorer, ref: 6150, 1953, lever movement signed and numbered 47718, black dial with gilt painted triangular, baton and 3-6-9 Arabic radium luminous hour markers, gilt painted outer minute track and marked Swiss below 6, luminous Mercedes hands, screw down winding crown, early ''bubbleback'' signed inside Montres Rolex S.A and numbered 6150 and dated IV53, case serial number 944813, Rolex stainless steel oyster bracelet with riveted spring loaded links and a deployant clasp, end links stamped RD.874089 and 58, 35mm wide see illustration This reference 6150 is one of the rarest and earliest examples of the ''Explorer'' model. Some collectors refer to the reference as a ''pre-Explorer'' since it was only manufactured in 1953. The ''pre-Explorer'' dial was firstly marked ''Precision'' and, like this example, shows Rolex started after that signing the dial with ''Explorer'' in the early stages. The explorer model was marketed and introduced firstly for adventurers and in particular mountain climbers. It was launched in 1953 to celebrate Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay's ascension of Mt. Everest, who wore Rolex Oyster Perpetual wristwatches during their historic climb.
