A George III Silver Tea-Caddy
by George Smith and Thomas Hayter, London, 1801

tapering oval and with fluted sides, engraved with foliage swags, centring on the front a vacant cartouche and on the back a cartouche engraved with an initial, the hinged cover with a foliage and latticework engraved border and vase-shaped finial

Fully marked underneath. Further marked inside hinged cover with a lion passant. The marks are generally clear, though there is some minor wear to the maker's mark. There is overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. There are some minor bruises. The cartouche on the front has presumably been erased though does not feel thin. The engraved initial on the back is 'N', The finial on the cover leans slightly. The lock is later and is included in the gross weight. There is no key.
