A George II Britannia Standard Silver Salver, mark of Paul Crespin, probably overstriking...

A George II Britannia Standard Silver Salver, mark of Paul Crespin, probably overstriking another, London 1730, circular with upturned scalloped rim on three scroll feet, the field engraved with a border of medallion heads and trellis work, the centre with a foliate cartouche and later arms for Fellowes, 23.5cm diameter, 17oz 2dwt

The arms on the present lot appear to correspond to both a pair of small waiters, Paul Crespin, 1732; and a salver, Samuel Margas, 1725, in the collection of the Ashmolean Museum, from the Farrer Bequest, all of which with erased armorials and the later arms of Fellowes added.

A salver of matching design by Crespin, of 1738, can be found in the Colonial Williamsburg Collection, USA.

It is worth noting that this design was also produced by Paul de Lamerie during the same period. For a silver-gilt example of 1735 see Christie's, New York, Important Silver, 21 Oct 2003, Lot 410; and a pair, of 1732, Sotheby's, London, 17 Nov 2010, Lot 20.
The style of the engraved border to the present example also bears some similarities to the border on a pair of small waiters by de Lamerie, from 1731, in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, which also incorporate the rather distinctive heads found within the circular reserves here. Examples of Crespin's mark overstriking that of de Lamerie are known, most famously on The Chesterfield Wine Coolers of 1727, now in the collection of the V&A and the Royal Museum of Scotland.

Sold for £2,000
Estimated at £1,000 - £1,500

. Marks clear to underside. One or two small splits to rim edge in fluting. General consistent wear to the engraving, the arms to centre however crisper than the surround and border. The salver slopes to one side somewhat when sat on a flat surface. Private family collection.
