oval and with reeded rim
48cm wide, 56oz 3dwt, 1,747gr
Provenance:
Possibly Dreweatts, Godalming, 8 November 2006, lot 413.
A survey of the silver produced by Mess'rs Prince and Cattles can be found by reviewing the ledgers of the York Assay Office from 4 January 1805 to 19 April 1821 and as reproduced by M. Baggott, An Illustrated Guide to York Hallmarks 1776-1858, Bodmin, 2010.
Consulting Baggott’s transcriptions, it is clear that most of Prince and Cattles silver production at Coney Street, York in 1805, and indeed later in their career, was confined to table-silver. Regular listing include those for silver forks, soup ladles, tongs, and spoons, variously described. The present dish is likely one described as a ‘large dish’ submitted for assay on 12 February 1805 as part of of a parcel including ‘a pair of silver salts, a chalice & plate, 2 doz forks, a large dish, 6 butter ladles, 5 soup ladles, a large turine, a buckle, a frame for glass, a castor top, a waiter, 3 large seals, 8 doz & 11 spoons’, (M. Baggott, op cit., p 151).
Fully marked under rim, including with York town mark. There is some wear to the marks but in general each is still clear. There is some overall surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. There are some minor pin dents. There are some more obvious knife marks. There are no obvious signs of an erasure.
