An Impressive Decorative 19th Century Embroidered Wall Hanging Possibly Russian,worked primarily in gold and silver, incorporating a variety of threads and purls, with appliqued silk brocade, wool paisley and other patterned flower heads and detailing, the centre of the panel has three arched style windows, featuring the tree of life to the centre, flanked on either side by panels with 'palmette' style trees, underneath a Russian style hanging incense burner, other motifs include a pair of singing birds and fruits, all within a floral applique border, on a cream silk ground, 180cm by 260cm; Together with some photocopied newspaper articles and ephemera.
Provenance; It was donated by the Sisters of Newlands Convent in Middlesbrough to the current owners, The Bar Convent Trust in York, unfortunately we have no earlier history. It has since been sympathetically restored by members of the City of York Embroiders Guild, mainly to stabilise the backing cloth.
