After the Antique: A Bronze Figure of Silenus, standing beside a tree trunk holding Bacchus as a child, on a slate plinth, 60cm high This model of Silenus cradling the infant Bacchus is derived from an ancient Roman marble discovered before 1569 by Carlo Muti. It was displayed in the Villa Borghese from 1638 and soon became a popular model for sculptors, working both in marble and in bronze. It is believed that the Roman marble was a copy of a bronze original believed to be either by Praxiteles or Lysippos and dated to approximately 400BC
