Rolex: A Rare 'Meters First' Dial Stainless Steel Automatic Centre Seconds Wristwatch

(calibre 1520) lever movement signed, original matte finish black dial with luminous dagger, dot and baton markers, Mercedes hands, protected screw down crown, calibrated bezel, screw back with an engraved inscription, signed inside with maker's mark Montres Rolex S.A Geneva Switzerland, numbered 5513 and dated II.67, case serial number 1617133, Rolex stainless steel Oyster bracelet with a deployant fliplock clasp numbered 93150 and date code letter for 1983, end links stamped 593, with part of the guarantee paperwork noting that this watch was purchased on 20th March 1968 from D.A.Scott jewellers 37 Church Street Hartlepool

This rare Submariner reference 5513 dial version is the very first matte finish dial in the 5513 which followed the earlier glossy finish dials. This dial was introduced in around 1966 and the collectors' so-called term is 'Meters First' which refers to the measurement depth rating reading with the metric rating first followed by the imperial feet reading second. This was only used for a few years until Rolex dials started to read the imperial rating first at the end of the 1960's. This is a rare example showing the original matte finish dial and original luminous zinc sulphide and tritium lume.

Case and bracelet with surface scratches, case with minor dents in parts, bezel triangular dot marker at 12 is missing, bezel with scratches, bezel is stuck at present and not rotating, case back with an engraved inscription "Richard A Milner". This Rolex bracelet has been later placed onto this watch and from the letter date code dates this to 1983, bracelet clasp needs attention for it to close correctly, crown is screwing down correctly on the threaded tube, plexi glass with a crack and scratches, black dial surface has faded , the signature and dial lettering is very clear, luminous hour markers has evenly faded but with a good patina, hour markers are very slightly discoloured in parts, hand setting correctly, movement is dirty, movement in going order.
