Auguste and Jean Gossein were both born circa 1880/90 in Sangatte pas-de-calais and moved to England when they were young men. Auguste initially worked as a 'Native French Professor' teaching at Trent College and Sheffield University. Jean was an artist, and in the 1911 consensus was listed as being a designer, based in Derbyshire, later becoming a British Citizen in 1926. They went on to trade as 'Gossein Brothers, Laces, Plain and Fancy Net Manufacturers'
