A Sapphire, Ruby and Diamond Brooch, by John Brogden, circa 1880, the yellow tapered open wirework and beadwork frame with an old cut diamond centrally flanked by a cushion cut ruby and sapphire, in rubbed over settings, estimated diamond weight 0.10 carat approximately, length 6.2cm

John Brogden was a Victorian era manufacturing jeweller. He was an apprentice for a London firm of watch and clockmakers becoming a partner in 1831 with James William Garland. From 1842 to 1864 he was a partner of the firm of Watherston and Brogden. In 1864 Brogden took over the business and operated under his own name until 1880. Between 1881 and 1885 he worked as an 'Art Goldsmith' at the Grand Hotel Buildings in Charing Cross. Besides exhibiting jewellery at the 1851 Great Exhibition, John Brogden won awards at various exhibitions in Paris and London from the 1850s to the 1870s. His ideas were inspired by archaeological and renaissance objects and he enjoyed Royal patronage.

The brooch is in good condition. It fastens with a pin and C-hook catch. It is stamped 'JB' for John Brogden. In our opinion would test as gold. The approximate qualities of the diamond are; colour I/J, clarity I1/I2. With original box by John Brogden Art Goldsmith, Grand Hotel Builidngs in Charing Cross. Gross weight 5.9 grams. CR made 30.09.21.
