Country House Sale

Lot 244

244

An Irish Fruitwood Penal Cross, dated 1762, carved in relief with the figure of Christ and incised INRI and with other symbols of the Passion including cords, a ladder, a cockerel and a cooking pot, the reverse incised IHS, the date and nails and scourges
16.5cm high

Penal Crosses take their name from a series of laws passed to surpress the Catholic population in Ireland, which coincided with the production of these figures. They appear to have been produced by woodcarvers working in the region of Lough Derg, County Donegal, a site of pilgrimage associated with St Patrick, purchased as a souvenir of the journey. A number of examples are to be seen in the National Museum of Ireland, with dates ranging from 1702 to the early 19th century. Many examples include incised decoration refering to the Passion of Christ, often including a cockerel and cooking pot below the feet of Christ. This symbol is associated with the Biblical story of Judas, whose wife was cooking the bird in the pot and remarked that the chance of Jesus rising from the dead was about the same as the cock leaping from the pot, at which the bird flew from the pot and crowed.

Sold for £1,700
Estimated at £300 - £500

The right arm of the cross re attached, this section could possibly be a remade piece judging by the fact that the grain travels against the grain of the rest of the carving. Age related split near the hole at the top. Some surface craquelure and general wear.

Auction: Country House Sale, 14th Sep, 2024

The September Country House Sale will include a number of private collections, including The Collection of the Late Captain Edward Cazenove (1923-2000).

The Collection of the Late Captain Edward Cazenove

Devoted hunter and art collector Captain Edward "Teddy" Cazenove was born on 11 June 1923. He was brought up by his New York-born mother, Edith, at the family house of Cottesbrooke in Northamptonshire. Cazenove was educated at Eton and Oxford, where he took every chance he could to hunt.

Shortly after graduating from Oxford, he joined the Army and served diligently throughout the Second World War. He was taken prisoner in France in 1944 and was wounded attempting to escape. After the war, instead of following in his father's footsteps and joining the family firm of stockbrokers, which had been established from the 1820s, Cazenove chose to do what he loved best. He settled in Pytchley, Northamptonshire, to hunt. Highly skilled and consistently enthusiastic, Cazenove became Master of hunts in England, Scotland and Ireland. He died aged 77 in 2000.

The sale will also include a Private Collection of Works by Fred Lawson and a Private Collection of Works by William Miller Frazer.
