A Pair of Japanese Shibayama Inlaid Elephant Ivory Vases, Meiji period, each with key pattern rims over front and reverse oval panels depicting on one side three boys playing on swings, with spinning tops and hoopla amongst flowers, the others with Oriental pheasants and song birds amongst flowering chrysanthemums, kiku and prunus in diverse materials including mother-of-pearl, tortoiseshell, stained ivory and red coral, beneath fenhuang birds in hiramaki-e lacquer, each with inset mother-of-pearl kakihan with multiple incised character signature rubbed with black pigment, 18cm high, each on an ebonised wood stand carved with fruiting peaches, 22cm high overall

Some typical losses to inlaid decoration to include the head and part of tail of one bird, part of eyes of two other birds, section of a tree trunk, four complete flowerheads and other minor losses. Some wear to gilding and minor surface wear and splitting. Stand with minor wear. 171013
