Omar Ramsden (1873-1939): An Arts & Crafts Silver and Enamel Dish, London, 1920, circular and with twisted wire borders, centring an enamel plaque painted with a portrait of Emilie Charlotte, Lady de Bathe (Lillie Langtry), probably inspired by Edward John Poynter's (1836-1919) portrait now in the collection of the Jersey Museum and Art Gallery, on five ball feet, hallmarked London, 1920, maker's mark OR, in original gilt-tooled fitted black leather case,
12.2cm diameter in a fitted case, gross weight 4oz 14dwt, 146gr

Emilie Charlotte, Lady de Bathe (1853-1929), was better known by her name Lillie Langtry, through her first husband, and was nicknamed ‘The Jersey Lily’. She was born in Jersey before moving to London where was to create a sensation as the poster-girl for Pears soap and a West End actress. Her fame and beauty made her popular in London society. She was married twice, first to Edward Langtry, an Irish landowner, and later to Gerald de Bathe, son and first legitimate heir to Sir Henry de Bathe, 4th Baronet. She was also rumoured to have been the mistress of King Edward VII while he was still Prince of Wales.

Fully marked underneath. The marks are clear. There is some overall minor surface scratching and wear, consistent with age and use. The wear is noticeable as a softening to the high points. There are some minor scuffs to the case.

A group of important pieces of Arts and Crafts Silver from the Lion Collection will be on offer in the sale. The Lion Collection was carefully curated by John L. Davis, and comprises fine pieces by some of the greatest makers and designers working in the first half of the 20th century such as Archibald Knox for Liberty, Henry George Murphy, Omar Ramsden and Alwyn Carr, along with rare examples by the Keswick School of Industrial Arts.

The sale will also offer part of the Dr Eileen Cobb Collection, including a colourful selection of decorative pottery cats including and example by Gallé and finely made 20th century furniture. 

Another good offering of Mouseman furniture and furnishings includes two 1930s pieces made for Ronald and Lillian Crossley's Arts and Crafts house 'Tudor Croft' in Guisborough.
