An Italian Ebony and Ivory Inlaid Chess Board, by Ferdinando Pogliani, circa 1880, of canted rectangular form, the chessboard with alternating squares, the ivory squares with stylised leaf bosses within broad scrolling acanthus and honeysuckle border, over a single frieze drawer and sides similarly decorated, base of drawer stamped twice FERD POGLIANI MILANO EBENISTA, 45cm by 45cm; together with a modern natural and stained wood chess set Active in Milan from 1854, Poligani's ivory inlaid ebony furniture in Renaissance style became extremely popular throughout Europe, winning numerous medals at international exhibitions.
