An SS Great Eastern/Leviathan Commemorative Nautilus Shell, circa 1855, engraved with a portrait of the paddle steamer and inscribed The Leviathan 25,000 tons, length 690 feet, breadth 82 Do, depth 60 Do, across paddle boxes 14 Do and with flowers and flags, 20cm long Launched in 1858, the Leviathan, designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, was the largest ship ever built at the time. The costs of building and launching ruined the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and so she lay unfinished for a year before being sold to the Great Eastern Ship Company, after which she was renamed The Great Eastern
