Coffee cup with wide glaze crazing, two firing floors to the rim, fritting to the lower handle terminal, a lobed saucer with a small v shape section of loss to the rim, a crack with associated staining, flower spray saucer, crack to the inner well, octagonal tea bowl, good condition, circular tea bowl with heavy rim chipping and fritting, larger figure painted saucer, a section of the rim abraided, another figural saucer, v-shaped chips and three hair cracks, a saucer with foliage, four hair cracks with the rim, glaze cracks to the underside, a pair of saucers, one in two staples with a v shaped section of loss, the other with rim chips and fritting, sleeve vase with heavy loss and chips to the top rim, smaller chips to the foot, long vertical crack to the main body.

This Summer Tennants Auctioneers are delighted to present a single-owner sale of ceramics and collector’s curiosities in David Battie: A Study Collection. The sale will comprise over 180 lots of academic interest from David Battie’s extensive and important collection. With an eye for the unusual, David Battie has assembled a fascinating collection filled with rare and interesting pieces.
David Battie joined Sotheby’s in 1965 and worked in the Ceramics and Oriental Art Departments before being made a director in 1976. He was a regular face on the Antiques Roadshow for many years and appeared on the show from the first episode, which was aired in 1977. A leading authority on ceramics, and in particular Chinese and Japanese ceramics, David has written numerous publications on the subject.
