A Fine and Rare "Ed White " Pre-Moon Stainless Steel Chronograph Wristwatch, signed Omega,...

A Fine and Rare "Ed White" Pre-Moon Stainless Steel Chronograph Wristwatch, signed Omega, model: Speedmaster, so called "Ed White", ref: 105.003, 1964, (calibre 321) lever movement signed and numbered 22081032, column wheel chronograph, dust cover, matte finished black dial with luminous baton markers and a fifths of seconds track, three dials for seconds, 30-minute and 12-hour registers, buttons in the band to operate chronograph, tachymeter bezel, screw back with the Speedmaster monogram, inside back cover numbered 105.003-64, later stainless steel Omega bracelet with a deployant clasp numbered 1039 3/71, 39mm wide see illustration

The pre-moon Speedmaster reference 105.003 is colloquially referred to as the "Ed White" Speedmaster because this model type and reference was worn by NASA Astronaut Edward Higgins "Ed" White (1930-1967) when he was the first American to walk in space in 1965.
The reference 105.003 is rare as it was only in production for around three years from 1963 and then superseded by the 'professional' reference version 105.012 which, famously, was worn on the moon landing in 1969. Typical features of the "Ed White" pre-moon Speedmaster are the straight lugs, no crown guards and just signed on the dial Omega Speedmaster without the professional signature.

Sold for £7,500
