Having joined the Derby porcelain factory as an apprentice painter at the age of 14, Haslem practiced drawing in his spare time painting portraits from life as well as copying Old Masters. He moved to London in 1835 as a pupil of ET Parris and was later patronised by Queen Victoria, the Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Sussex and other members of the Royal Family. The subject, William Horsley, possibly depicts the English composer and organist William Horsley
