A French Silver Plate Figure Group of the Three Graces, 19th century, stamped AD Fountaine, naturalistically cast as three maidens standing back to back, on marble base and with associated mercury glass ball above, 81cm high The present sculpture is a faithful copy of the original, executed in marble, by Germain Pilon (c.1525-1590), most accurately known as Monument du coeur d'Henri II, the Monument of the Heart of Henry II of France. Commissioned in 1561 by Queen Catherine de Medicis in tribute to her late husband the sculpture originally featured a bronze urn which contained the heart of Henry II, though this was melted down during the French revolution and is not reproduced in the present version.
