Hildegarde Reid "Sunflowers" Signed, oil on canvas, 79.5cm by 79.5cm

Born on the edge of the Kalahari Desert, Northern Cape Province, South Africa, Hildegarde Reid studied Social Science at the University of the Orange Free State but has always been passionately involved with painting. Reid is primarily a colourist. Her work is much influenced by her roots and she brings warmth and vibrancy into her paintings where with gay abandon she uses colour and paint in a way that has been described as ‘delightfully sensual’. Whether tackling cluttered still life’s of everyday objects, or landscapes of Southern Africa and Europe, she delights in depicting the effects of light and dark. The Impressionists and Scottish colourists have had a major influence on her work and although mainly an oil painter, Reid also uses watercolour and mixed media. Reid has hung with the Society of Women Artists, Britain’s Artists, and with the Royal Society of Oil Painters. She has been represented at the Affordable Art Fair and at Chelsea Art Fair. She has had solo shows at the South African Embassy, the Millennium Gallery, Sunbury-on-Thames, the Coffee Gallery WC1 and the Olivier Theatre Foyer, and has been Guest Artist at the Family Law in Partnership, Covent Garden. Her gallery representation includes: The Bourne Gallery, Reigate; Highgate Fine Art; Hollywood Road Gallery, Chelsea; and the Barry Keene Gallery, Henley-on-Thames. She is also a Member of Chelsea Art Society. Reid came to the UK in the 1960's, is married with two children, and lives in Surrey where she teaches and paints in her studio in Molesey. She regularly runs painting workshops and demonstrations for a number of art societies.
